Out Of The Strong, Something Sweet – a fine art balloon sculpture exhibition

Hosted at The Jung Center of Houston, August 19th-24th, 2024, “Out of the Strong, Something Sweet” was an exhibition consisting of two large 6ftx7ft paintings, a gruesome balloon sculpture centerpiece, and walls covered in balloon tendrils and honeycomb made from balloon dogs. The show delved into my experience growing up in The Family International, the cult formally known as The Children of God.

A Struggle In Secret: The Wedding Riddle

On display in print was the first part of my Samson series, which depicts my struggle with the isolation and alienation of being brought up home-schooled with an ideology of elitist separation from the world, and the struggle to break down the barriers that resulted from that.

The centerpiece sculpture of the show was the 2nd part in the Samson series, in which I wrestle with my family legacy while also taking steps to appreciate the wonder and joy that I experienced throughout my unconventional childhood.

Artist Talk

This exhibition, funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance, and hosted by The Jung Center of Houston, Texas, was a living, breathing exhibition, featuring a balloon environment that changed and grew throughout the week. On the final day, I gave an artist talk, expounding on my cult experience and giving insight into various balloon works I’ve made previously.

The hour and a half talk is available to view online exclusively for my patrons at patreon.com/BalloonsinBOLD
