I Just Want To Remember Her Clearly Again
This sculpture was created for UnBroken Spring, the Houston regional burn which occurred March 16th-19th, 2023, a week before the eight-year anniversary of my older sister’s passing. Every passing year the memories of Lisa and our time together grow more distorted and harder to recollect.
I remember how awkward her smile was for pictures, and the silly tricks my dad would use to get a laugh out of her for the camera. I remember how she would have fun being competitive with me and didn’t let losing discourage her from trying. I remember her always being happy with ordering whatever my younger sister chose off the menu so she wouldn’t have to deal with choice anxiety. I wish I remembered more. I wish I made more memories with her.
The challenge of an outdoor balloon installation resulted in a sculpture that transformed over the course of the event. The balloon at the center of the eye containing a portrait of Lisa oxidized over time, obscuring the image inside and revealing a hidden message written on the balloon with a non-oxidizing coating.
